MAY PET OF THE MONTH

Deacon “Burger-Butt” Katt was diagnosed with being a “train-wreck” at a young age. He has had chronic urinary problems his whole life, he needed to have surgery to let him urinate naturally without the use of a urinary catheter called a perineal urostomy. He has had bladder stones, mild kidney disease, chronic constipation and stomatitis. Dr. Eddy treated him with acupuncture and steroids for several months before she decided that his mouth was healthy enough to remove all of his remaining teeth. Now, he eats like a champion again! His dad tried to get him to eat just canned food but, Deacon knows the first rule of being a cat; “stolen food tastes better.” Deacon kept stealing his sisters dry food so his dad caved in and gave him dry food again.

Today Dr. Eddy reports that Deacon is doing fabulous and to keep up the good work, way to go Deacon!

APRIL PET OF THE MONTH!

A wonderful adoption story submitted by our client...

I adopted Lexi from the Oregon Humane Society about 4 years ago. Out of the four dogs I was considering, she was the only one who didn't mind my mom's wheelchair. She is full of energy, and loves everyone. This picture was taken when my great-nephew Ezra came to visit with us with his grandma. At first he was really shy around her, but she kept coming to him and they played and played and played. He loved it, she loved it and it wore her out. I love her so much; she is such a sweetie pie.

WE LOVE PET INSURANCE!

TAIL OF A TRU HERO!

Foreign Body Ingestion and Heart Failure

Total Repaid: $26,492.31

New York City, NY
Enrolled since: December 2012

My husband and I decided to get a Golden Retriever puppy as a Christmas gift to one another this year. We brought home the most lovable, beautiful, sweet 7-week-old Golden Retriever anyone could ask for. We took him to a local vet soon after to establish a relationship with them and make sure Leo was in perfect health. He was!
The vet recommended that we sign up for a free first-month trial for Trupanion “since puppies can get themselves into a lot of trouble and you never know!” As soon as I got home, I signed up for the trial. I figured I’d never need it, but why not sign up anyway?

A week later, Leo had symptoms of diarrhea. We took him back to the vet and after they did an x-ray, they found a metallic object in Leo’s stomach. Surgery was the only answer. During surgery, the worst possible scenario happened. Leo suffered a cardiac arrest. After several hours of trying to come out of anesthesia, the vet told us that Leo was showing symptoms of neurological damage. That night was truly the lowest night of our lives. My husband threw up. I cried to the point of no consolation.

That night, we were told Leo had less than a 50% chance of survival. Wanting to give Leo a chance, we rushed him to a 24-hour critical care hospital. I truly cannot put into words the pain we experienced that first night, waiting to see if Leo would make it.

Leo made it through that first night, so we of course wanted to continue to be aggressive with treatment. We were willing to do whatever it took to save his life and give him a chance. I then remembered that I had signed up for Trupanion. I called Trupanion and spoke with one of their many AMAZING representatives. She listened to my story and said she saw no reason why I wouldn’t be covered. I couldn’t believe my ears. It just sounded too good to be true. Not only that, but she was extremely sensitive to my story and truly cared about what I was going through. It was like talking to a friend.

Leo was at the hospital for a week and one day. His final bill was nearly $30,000.00. Because of
Trupanion, my husband and I were able to SAVE LEO’S LIFE.

Leo is home now and doing AMAZING. They told us they weren’t sure if he would ever be able to walk, but guesswho’s zipping all over the house right now?!!! Leo!!!!!

CANINE INFLUENZA

The Willamette Humane Society has quarantined its dogs for the next 10 days due to three puppies that are suspected of having canine influenza—a respiratory infection that mimics kennel cough.“Most cases of dogs affected will have only a mild form of the disease,” said WHS Clinic Veterinarian, Jacqueline Harter. “There is no evidence that suggests that this disease poses any risk to humans or cats, although a small percentage of dogs may develop a more severe case of pneumonia.”

About 80 percent of dogs who become infected will have a mild form of the disease, and it is rarely fatal, according to the Center for Disease Control. The flu is spread by contact with respiratory secretions from infected dogs, by contact with contaminated objects and by people who come into contact with infected and uninfected dogs.

The puppies arrived at WHS as part of a litter on Feb. 1 and were recently adopted. The shelter has advised anyone who recently adopted a dog or has a dog that may have come into contact with a shelter dog to monitor their pet for symptoms.

Those symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose and lethargy. If people see signs of these symptoms, the shelter advises dog owners to contact their veterinarian.

The quarantine will end Feb. 28.

MARCH PET OF THE MONTH!

We're calling him Chance because he's recently been given a third chance at a happy, healthy life by Dr. Felton who refused to euthanize him at the young age of 8 for a very treatable condition. Chance is hyperthyroid and has never been treated until now. He's on his second week of medication and is feeling great. He takes his tablet in his first little spoonful of food each morning and evening. He's been adjusting to his foster home, and their two cats quite well. He's using the litterbox and starting to come out of his shell. He is a very talkative guy and will tell you all about it if he's hungry. His vocabulary also includes a very loud purr and beautiful trills. :) He's still a bit on the skinny side, but he will gain weight as his medication continues to help him.

More about Chance:
- Besides being hyperthyroid, his bloodwork showed that he's very healthy.
- He's declawed in the front (This was done at a very young age.)
- He will need medication daily for the rest of his life.
- He will need checkups and bloodwork every 6 to 12 months for the rest of his life.
- He prefers wet food, but will eat dry.
We would love to adopt Chance out to the perfect home... a home that will be dedicated to his care and will be his FOREVER home.
Thank you for opening your heart to him.

Sincerely,
The Team at Powell Blvd Vet Clinic
