Reese joined our family in October 2011 by chance. We were not actively looking to adopt a dog since our previous dog passed away from angiosarcoma earlier in the year. However, we have always kept the idea open. A post on the Internet came along of a young, lovable Doberman who desperately needed a home. Her owner could no longer afford to keep her and the living situation for Reese wasn’t ideal. After our initial meeting, we knew Reese was going to be joining our family. The following day arrangements were made and she was fast asleep in her new home.

Our first phone call was to Powell Vet Clinic to schedule her appointment. Our family have been clients of Dr. Lathrop since the late 1980’s and our pets have always received the best care. Reese was no exception. With the brief history we were given of her coming from Louisiana, Dr. Lathrop and his tech knew to test her for heart worms. Sure enough she came up positive. The treatment for heart worms is awful. It involves back-to-back shot of arsenic and zero activity.

Reese had to endure the next month in her kennel and was only allowed out if she was on her leash. She suffered liver failure and was very weak. However, Dr. Lathrop, Dr. Felton and the whole Powell team were incredible. They were constantly checking in on her and were always available to answer our questions and concerns. Besides calming our fears and being supportive to us, they have helped Reese into a normal dog’s life style again. She is now a healthy, energetic dog who loves to spend her time outdoors and play. Without the experience and knowledge of Powell Vet Clinic, Reese could have gone on with life without being tested until it was too late. We are eternally grateful to Dr. Lathrop and his amazing team.

Meet Louie, he loves attention, but he is not to much of a lap cat. He is on a wet food diet only per recommendation of the doctor, it helps keep his weight regulated. He is also on a food schedule of 6 AM and 6 PM. He's a chatty Cathy. He loves to sit on high things (window perch, back of the couch, etc). Looooooves boxes no matter how tiny. If he fits, he sits. Enjoys clawing things. He is used to claw caps and does not mind them. He also loves the cardboard scratchers. Loves laying on those microfiber throw blankets. Responds well to catnip. Is very active and agile for 9 years old! He likes to jump, play and chase toys. He does not like his belly or sides rubbed or pet. That results in a chomp to the hand. Louie will make a great companion.

On August 20, 2011 Koala came to Powell Boulevard Animal Clinic because her owner Peter was very worried about his little girl. You see she was not acting like her usual energetic, peppy self. Her nickname is "Squeaker" and when she stopped "squeaking" he knew he had to make an appointment to make sure it wasn't anything serious. He was also concerned because she hadn't had a bowel movement in over 3 days and had a loss of appetite which was very unusual for Koala.

Doctor Tokar examined Koala and after some tests Diagnosed her with Hepatic Lipidosis, a life threatening syndrome in cats characterized by excess fat accumulation in the liver of cats. It can occur in cats of any age or breed. Cats are unique in their tendency to develop this disorder. Excessive amounts of fat are broken down from the cat's peripheral fat storage tissue during fasting. This fat is then transported to the liver. The liver should then process this fat and export it to the rest of the body in a new form. In cats that develop Hepatic Lipidosis this process is impaired and the rate of fat export from the liver is much slower than the rate of fat intake, resulting in liver fat accumulation. Damage to the liver is caused by swelling of liver cells filled with fatty deposits as well as additional processes.

Koala's owner Peter was dedicated and determined that she make a full recovery. Koala was on a feeding tube for two entire months to reverse the liver damage. She was also on several medications to make sure that she got better. After many long months of caring after Koala, Peter is happy to report that she is back to her energetic, crazy self. Running laps around their home, playing with all her toys and her favorite chasing the laser pointer up the wall game. Peter could not imagine life without Koala, and now he has a long life ahead with his best friend.

Dear Dr. Eddy,

We can’t thank you enough for the sleuthing out the issue lurking beneath the surface of Zilla’s initial blood work this past September. Since it all started with asymptomatic Zilla tagging along with our scratching boy, Charlie, on a visit with you for his skin issues, then morphed into a discussion about teeth cleaning and the necessary blood work, we were taken somewhat back to receive the initial report about Zilla’s high calcium level.

Your persistence and professionalism brought us to the difficult decision to entrust her to the fine staff at Northwest Veterinary Specialists. She spent four days in the hospital, but her calcium level fell into the normal range the night of the surgery to remove the rogue parathyroid gland, and never plummeted into a hypocalcemic condition.

We missed her dearly while she was away, and visited her often. Her energy returned the day after surgery. We’re still trying to wean her off the diet of freshly cooked chicken that she enjoyed in the hospital.

Today her appetite is "through the roof", her trembling is markedly diminished, and her general disposition is vastly improved (cuter than ever). We are elated.

Xylitol Toxicity in Dogs

What is Xylitol?

Xylitol is a naturally occurring substance that is widely used as a sugar substitute. Chemically, it is a sugar alcohol, and in nature it is found in berries, plums, corn, oats, mushrooms, lettuce, trees, and some other hardwood trees and fruits. We, as humans, naturally produce this sugar alcohol in our bodies.

Commercially, most xylitol is extracted from corn fiber, birch trees, hardwood trees and other vegetable material. Although it has been used as, sugar substitute for decades, its popularity has increased dramatically in the last few years.

How is it used?

Xylitol is manufactured into a white powder that looks and tastes similar to sugar. In many countries it has been approved for use in oral care products, pharmaceuticals and as a food additive. Products that may contain xylitol include sugar-free gum, candies, cough syrup, children's chewable vitamins, mouthwash, breath mints and toothpaste, to list a few.

Why is xylitol increasing in popularity and use?

Xylitol is about as sweet as sucrose, but contains only about two-thirds of the calories. As a sugar substitute, it is lower on the glycemic index, a scale that ranks carbohydrate-rich foods by how much they raise blood glucose levels compared to glucose. Being lower on the glycemic index makes xylitol useful for diabetics or people on low carbohydrate diets.

With respect to oral health, research has shown that xylitol helps reduce the formation of plaque, inhibits dental cavities, and stimulates the production of saliva.

How safe is xylitol?

Xylitol is safe for use in humans. Xylitol, like most sugar alcohols, may have a mild laxative effect when eaten in large amounts, when first introduced to a diet. This occurs because, until the digestive system adapts, xylitol may not be completely digested in the intestines. This causes mild diarrhea and/or mild intestinal discomfort.

However, xylitol is extremely toxic to dogs. Even small amounts of xylitol can cause hypoglycemia, seizures, liver failure or even death in dogs.

Why is xylitol toxic to dogs?

In both humans and dogs, the level of blood sugar is controlled by the release of insulin from the pancreas. Xylitol does not stimulate the release of insulin from the pancreas in humans. However, when a dog eats something containing xylitol, the xylitol is quickly absorbed into the bloodstream, where it stimulates release of insulin from the pancreas. This rapid release of insulin results in a rapid and profound decrease in the level of blood sugar (hypoglycemia), an effect that occurs within half an hour of eating the xylitol. Hypoglycemia can be life-threatening.

How much xylitol is poisonous to a dog?

Xylitol is estimated to be 100 times as toxic as chocolate to dogs. The dose that can cause hypoglycemia in the dog has been reported between 50 and 220 milligrams of xylitol per pound of body weight (100-500 mg per kg). The ASPCA estimates that two or three sticks of gum sweetened with xylitol could be toxic to a 20 pound (9.1 kg) dog.

Intake of very high doses of xylitol (225-450 mg/lb or 500-1000 mg/kg body weight) has been implicated in liver failure in dogs.

What should I do if my dog eats something containing xylitol?

If you suspect that your pet has eaten a xylitol-containing product, please contact your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center immediately.

Do not induce vomiting or give anything orally to your dog unless specifically directed to do so by your veterinarian. It is important to get treatment for your dog as quickly as possible.

What are the symptoms of xylitol poisoning?

Symptoms of xylitol toxicity develop rapidly, usually within 30 minutes of consumption. Signs of hypoglycemia may include any or all of the following:

• Vomiting

• Weakness

• Incoordination or difficulty walking or standing

• Depression or lethargy

• Seizures

• Coma

In severe cases, the dog may develop seizures, internal bleeding or liver failure. Dogs that develop liver failure from xylitol poisoning may not show signs of hypoglycemia.

How is xylitol poisoning diagnosed?

A presumptive diagnosis of xylitol poisoning is made if there is a known or possible history that the dog ate something containing xylitol, coupled with symptoms of hypoglycemia. Since toxicity develops rapidly, your veterinarian will not wait for a confirmed diagnosis before beginning treatment.

Is there an antidote for xylitol toxicity?

No. There is no antidote for xylitol toxicity.

How is xylitol poisoning treated?

Fast and aggressive treatment by your veterinarian is essential to effectively reverse any toxic effects and prevent the development of severe problems.

If your dog has just eaten xylitol but has not yet developed any clinical signs, your veterinarian may induce vomiting to prevent further absorption. If clinical signs have developed, treatment will be based on the symptoms that are being shown. Since xylitol toxicity can cause both low blood glucose and low potassium levels, your veterinarian will perform blood work to determine whether these problems need to be treated. In all cases, your dog will require hospitalization for monitoring, intravenous fluids, and any other supportive care that may be needed.

What is the prognosis for recovery from xylitol poisoning?

The prognosis is good for dogs that are treated before symptoms develop, or for dogs that develop uncomplicated hypoglycemia that is reversed rapidly. If liver failure or a bleeding disorder develops, the prognosis is generally poor. If the dog lapses into a coma, the prognosis is very poor.

How can I prevent this problem?

If you personally use products containing xylitol, make sure they are stored safely, out of reach of your pets. Do not share any food that may contain xylitol with your pets. Only use pet toothpaste for pets, never human toothpaste.

The toxicity of xylitol for cats and other species is not documented at this time, although there has been some concern that ferrets may react to xylitol in a similar manner as dogs.

Pepper has lived a good and purposeful life of sixteen years. His early mission in life was to befriend our eldest daughter who struggled with a learning disability, much to the dismay of our younger daughter who had begged for a dog for four long years. It’s uncanny how these creatures know who needs them most.

On July 23, 2011, Pepper awoke unable to use either of his hind legs. Hoping it was leg cramps, we visited Dr. Eddy and found out it was probably a ruptured disc. She kindly and gently explained the problem and treatment, saying Pepper’s age was against him. His deep pain sensations in his hind legs gave a small ray of hope. When we went in, we feared the worst but, we left with a mission to give him a chance to live, if in fact, he was up to the challenge of rehab.

Being a nurse for over 30 years I met this task with an instinctual determination to persevere, to provide the best care possible. The first three weeks were tough. Pepper was unable to eliminate on his own, experienced restless nights, was given muscle relaxants, Prednisone and around the clock nursing care. Dr. Felton gave us strengthening exercises to “wake up the nerves in his legs” despite the fact that Pepper had had no movement in his hind legs for over a month. We did the exercises, faithfully, several times a day. Dr. Felton also prescribed water (bathtub) therapy that would add yet another dimension to his rehab.

Much to our delight, Pepper had a strong will to live and met the challenge of his rehab therapy. After about six weeks, the nerves in his hind legs began to wake up slowly, and to our absolute amazement, he incrementally began to bear weight and move his legs! He was increasingly and gently pushed to walk, which we assisted by strapping a strip of bed sheet under the lower half of his back. This provided stabilization and supported his back. When Dr. Felton examined him on ……. (?date), she said his progress “made her week” ! I saw tears of joy in her eyes as Pepper paraded around the office with his newfound purpose in life- inspiring us all with his will to live and providing an example of how to move on despite our aging bodies.

Falafel came to Powell Blvd. Veterinary Clinic when a client found her in a box at a local store; unable to keep the kitten we decided to foster her at the clinic until a home was found. Falafel did not seem to mind her temporary home as she spent most of her days sleeping, eating and of course soaking up love from anyone who came to visit. Sometimes one could find this adventurous girl playing behind the computers at the front desk with the receptionists. But no matter where she was in the clinic, one thing was certain... Falafel was now apart of our family at Powell.

After a short week we found a home for Falafel. Wasabi formally known as Falafel did not need any time to adjust to her new environment; she quickly found the best places to play, hide and relax.

Today Wasabi is still the kitten that has endless amounts of energy but now has a friend, who she can share her joy for life with. Penguin and Wasabi have a lot in common despite their age difference. When not playing or wrestling, both felines catch up on one of their favorite hobbies, bird watching on the window ledge.

Hi my name is Hewson also known as Hewsony. I spend my week days working at Powell Vet, where I lend a paw in making copies, organizing papers and making copies, did I mention copies?! Some of you may already know me because you have seen me around the clinic. Sometimes you can catch me coming out of my office upstairs when I am taking a break to play ball, I try to greet and meet our clients when I’m on my way out.

When I am not playing ball or soaking up love from all of my friends you can find me modeling, exercising, sleeping, chilling by the pool with my chickens, playing with my favorite bun bun (toy) , running around the barn with the horses, and enjoying my well deserved pay check (enzadent chew). So next time you see me at work please don’t be shy and say hi, I love making new friends! :)

Hi,
The following is my story. My name is Geronimo, but I go by "Gero" pronounced "Herro." I am from Mendoza, Argentina. I will have to start by telling you a little about my human Dad, Eric who was working in Argentina when he found me. He was strolling through a park with his girlfriend late one night and heard some whimpering. It was coming from an old soggy cardboard box. He says they started to walk away, but couldn't do it. Inside that box was ME, Gero. Me and my sisters were starving and full of parasites and sores. The scabies were so bad we had scratched ourselves raw. We would cry when we tried to scratch the bleeding sores. Eric carried us back to his apartment where we got a nice, warm bath. In that time, we were able to give Eric and his girlfriend a lot of our bugs so that their arms were also bitten all over so they knew a little bit about what we were feeling. Day after day my dad took me to the doctor to get shots and medicine for my sores. Me and my sisters lived on his porch while we were healing and getting stronger even though the landlord said we could not live there. We cuddled up together in his laundry basket, which also served as a carrier for us to ride down the two flights of steps and out to the park to go potty. When my sisters were four months old, my dad found them homes, but I was still too weak. He moved to another apartment where I could live with him and not make the landlord mad. In Mendoza people don't mind if dogs are off leash so I got to run and play a lot with my friends in the park. My dad taught me to stop at every corner and NEVER, EVER run in the street because even thought there are stop signs in Mendoza drivers just do what they want so I would wait patiently for my dad to catch up. When he gave the command to cross a street, I learned to run like hell or die.

Anyway, after a year my dad spent a lot of time and money to get permission to bring me to America. In America it is very different. People talk funny with words I still do not yet understand and I am not really allowed off leash except in the woods or in special parks. I love being here and having people who love me and take care of me, like all the wonderful people at Powell Blvd. Veterinary Clinic. My dad says I that I give back a thousand times more love than I ask for so I guess that means I'll be staying. Thanks for listening.

Jupiter is a 5-year-old Labrador Retriever that if full of energy and loves life. On June 11^thJupiter was not felling well, vomiting off and on for the last few days which soon became pure water. However his energy was still normal and food did not seem to be an issue at this point. After being on a bland diet and trying Pepto Bismal, it seemed that the only thing left for the owners to do was to take him to Powell Vet.

After arriving at the Vet the patients’ symptoms may have been caused from a possible obstruction in his intestine. Dr. Tokar advised to do X-rays to confirm the obstruction but decided in the end to try and few things first before proceeding. Jupiter went home with anti-nausea medicine that would help if it was not a blockage. Soon after arriving home Jupiter began to vomit but still seemed quite happy and peppy. Unfortunately Powell Vet was closed for the weekend, the owners decided to watch him for the next twenty four hours to determine if he needed to go to an Emergency Hospital. Sunday morning came and Jupiter was less active and in pain. Off to Dove Lewis Emergency Hospital they went. While being at Dove Lewis an X-ray could not confirm a blockage so after an ultra sound the diagnoses was finally in. Jupiter had a foreign body obstruction. Overnight the patient received fluids and pain medication to make him comfortable over night. The next morning the patient was transferred to Powell for surgery.

Monday morning Dr. Tokar performed surgery to remove this mysterious blockage. In the end the blockage was caused by a small piece of a corn cob that was not much bigger than a penny. Jupiter recovered well from the surgery and went home later that night.

To this day the owner is unaware of where Jupiter got the corn on the cob, but is happy that he is back to normal and happy as can be!

Hi! My name is Benni, like Benni and the jets, Beatles anyone? Anyways, let me tell you about my story... I am a cute Maltese mix that was found when I was taking my daily stroll on the streets of Portland. Looking tired and hungry, I was at a low in my life, when out of no where a sweet girl came to my rescue. Soon after being picked up I was then taken to Powell Vet where I was released into their medical care. At first I was shy, shaking and mostly scared of this new place. After being held, I started to warm up to the pretty ladies that were trying to trim all of my mats that I acquired from being on the streets for so long . I didn't even know how many mats I had until I could finally feel my toes again and move in ways I did not know was possible! Things were starting to turn around for me :)

After being at the clinic for days, one of the nice Powell ladies decided to become my new foster Mom. I am now learning how to sit, stay, roll over and I can even dance (for my favorite treats). I think I am one lucky guy to receive all of this love and attention. I hope this is my forever home!

We adopted Indi from the Oregon Humane Society in August of 2008. While she was there, she was being treated for severe allergic reactions to corn, wheat and soy products. When we got her, she was just starting to get hair growing on her back end. With a proper diet, she soon developed a gorgeous mane, tail and feathers on her hind legs – she was beautiful! One Saturday morning in April of 2010, I was giving her belly rubs when I noticed a mass had appeared on her belly. We were very lucky and got Indi in to see Dr. Felton that morning. She took cell cultures and sent them off for testing. That Tuesday we got results back showing the cells were cancerous. Dr. Felton scheduled Indi for surgery that Friday to remove the mass and the surrounding tissues. Since it involved her mammary glands, they were also going to be removed as well. Once the surgery was completed the tissues would be sent off for more analysis and we’d learn what type of cancer Indi had. Indi came out of surgery with over 70 staples and a 17 inch incision.

The results were not good. She had a very aggressive and deadly form of mammary cancer. However, Dr. Felton & the wonderful staff had managed to remove every bit of the cancer from Indi during surgery! We also took Indi to an oncologist for chemotherapy. Her prognosis was guarded at best, in fact they were very generous when they gave her 6 months, with chemotherapy.

Indi went through 6 rounds of chemo, handling each one beautifully! After the first two rounds she was given a tennis ball instead of a sedative. Her ball kept her calm and when she would come home, she was ready to go to the park! We recently celebrated her 1 year anniversary of being cancer free! Today Indi is happy, healthy and beautiful! There have been no recurrences of the cancer and she hasn’t slowed down a bit! She shares home with Mom & Dad, her Golden Retriever brother Zo and our two cats, Draco & Callie. She loves tennis balls, loves testing new treat recipes for Zobindi’s Wholesome Pet Treats (of which she had a very BIG part in starting) and loves snuggling and giving sneaky kisses.

Nicky’s story was one that not only touched all of our hearts at Powell Vet, but also one that showed the strength and determination of a canines will to survive.

November 2011, Nicky and his owner made a trip to Lincoln City, at first it was like any other weekend, but little did they know it would end up to be much more than one could imagine. Nicky being the Blue Heeler and Australian mix that he is, loved his trips to the beach where he could run free and play. On one cold day at the coast Nicky had seen something in the woods that caught his eye and off he went into the woods to see what it may be. Nicky’s owner called for Nicky and searched for hours that soon turned into a rescue mission that lasted for days. Posters were hung and phone calls were made and now it seemed to be a waiting game, with time passing and hope starting to fade.

January 2011, Nicky found his way back to civilization and home. After Nicky was missing for about 7 weeks we found that he had minimal wounds on his feet, lethargy, lost over half of his body weight and also contracted three different parasites, but somehow managed to survive, how? We will never know.

Nicky today is almost back to his normal weight and seems to be healthy and happy!

Hi, My name is Vinny. I am a 7 month old Doberman Pincher. I really like running on the Forest Park Trails, chasing my lab/shepherd mix uncle Kato and chewing on anything that will fit into my mouth. My favorite word is NO, but I am very cuddly at night. I love attention and being held even though I am reaching 60lbs now. I have made quite a name for myself at Powell Veterinary Clinic. In December, I was chewing on my favorite green monster and decided it tasted so good that I wanted to swallow its tail. I didn't realize that it was going to get stuck in my stomach. I wasn't feeling very well and I had to go and visit Doctor Lathrop and his staff. After two days of not eating and being on IV Fluids I had my first sleep over at Dove Lewis. I had to have Surgery and have my Green Monster's tail removed from my tummy. I felt much better after my surgery. My parents only give me hard rubber toys now!!! Dr. Lathrop and his staff saved my life. I now enjoy visiting them and receiving lots of attention and treats. If you happen to see me at Powell Vet, don't be shy. I really like meeting new friends.

Rocky joined our family at Powell Boulevard Veterinary Clinic in 2009, and stole our hearts from the very start. Rocky is known at the clinic for his gentle and kind way with the ladies, but he is also a very strong and large canine, weighing in at 155 pounds (hence the name Rocky). Before becoming a part of our family, Rocky was living in California, but due to severe environmental allergies that were affecting his quality of life he made the move to Oregon. Soon after the long trip Rocky was rewarded with meeting his new family, and it was love at first sight. Rocky also gained a new canine family member as well (Sweetie a Bull mastiff), one could often find these two stopping traffic as they would play outside, it was truly a sight to see. He has also been known to give a hand when needed, when the youngest family member was learning to walk Rocky let him grab a hold of his jowls and pull himself up, which then lead to walking to for first time. Rocky is a part of this family forever.

Hey! My name is Buster, a big Orange tabby who loves to be loved. As you can tell I am not the slimmest fellow, but I am working on my waist line and looking pretty good these days. The secret to my success is this wonderful diet my parents and Dr. Tokar put me on called Purina OM (overweight management). Some of my friends may think switching to a diet food would be no good, but for this Cat it was no problem. I love all food... Maybe that was the problem? My starting weight in November was 24 big ones and today I am weighing in at 20. I know it is only a four pound loss but let me tell ya, I feel so good! These days I find myself jumping more, playing catch my favorite string and just more energy throughout the day. Even though I am looking great and feeling good I still have a few pounds to shed and the goal of reaching my bottom (thanks Dad for the reminder). Overall I am quite happy with the new me and you should be too!

Hi! My name is Emma, but you can call me Pin Pom; which is short for Min Pin Pomeranian. I am not just your everyday adorable Pom who is easy on the eyes. But, I am also a pretty down to earth girl once you get to know me. Other than looking cute all of the time I enjoy my tennis balls, chasing after Frisbees, running, and digging in the sand. Such a great life don’t ya know? Besides my daily activities, I also have a wonderful family that gives me lots of care and love. I do not know where I would be today without them.

I cannot remember what I was doing the day I hurt myself… Hmmm… Maybe I was digging or maybe I was running. Oh well, whatever it was, my knee sure did not like it. The darn thing would not stay in place! Soon after my parents took me to Powell Vet where Dr. Tokar diagnosed me with a Luxating Patella (dislocated knee). So no more running for me! Just as I thought my whole life was over, Dr. Van Gundy came to my rescue and fixed me right up!

Today I am still on light duty with an exercise restriction after my surgery, but I hope to start my rehabilitation in the next few weeks. I can see lots of running in my future and can’t wait!

NOVEMBER PET OF THE MONTH

Bob was diagnosed with diabetes when he was 9 ½ years old. It has not been an easy journey but with his strong will and determination he has proven many of times that he has what it takes me make the best out of life, despite the odds stacked against him.

Before Bob was diagnosed with diabetes he was happy and healthy. Eating never seemed to be an issue for Bob until his mom noticed that he was losing weight, drinking more water and becoming very weak. Bob then became critically ill and had no choice but to go see a doctor. After arriving at the Vet with a high fever and possible infection, he was put on antibiotics and hoped for the best. With no signs of improvement, it was back to the vet for Bob! After a short stay and a few tests later, Bob was officially diagnosed as a diabetic. Soon after Bob and his family decided to become a part of our family at Powell Vet. Where he could continue to get the treatment, love and support he would need for the rest of his life.

Bob today still has good days and bad days with diabetes. However he is still as feisty as can be! When Bob is not at Powell Vet he likes to travel, drink from cups and of course enjoy his occasional catnip. Over all Bob is doing great with many thanks to his Mom, for all her love and support and also to Dr. Felton who never gave up.

What's up? Do you want me to tell you my story? Ok, let's see... My name is Arthur. I am black, cute, sometimes shy... Oh wait, you mean you want to hear about where I came from and not how cute I am?  Ok my bad! So...  I was found the day before labor day when I was just hanging out. I spent all morning digging a hole (my best yet) and yup that's where they found me. The next thing I know this lovely lady picked me up and put me in her car. Off we went to Powell Blvd. Veterinary Clinic where I was then told what bad shape I was in. Two open wounds, one swollen eye, icky fleas all over me and did I mention some old scars. After spending two weeks at the clinic I started to warm up to humans again. I received lots of love, baths, and long walks. I also learned how to be a puppy for the first time, :) and I was starting to think this place isn't so bad after all. And then the best thing happened... I got to meet my new foster Mom, Heather!

I am now in my new house and I have to say it's awesome! I am still in training like any normal pup would be, but I have to say this new life is sweeeet. Thanks to all of my extended family at Powell Vet. You guys are the best!

Hi my name is Daisy, you know like the flower but with a little more hair, floppy ears and a tail....OK so not exactly the same but you get the idea. Besides looking cute all day I also enjoy playing with my people siblings, which if I don't say so myself I think I am more like a big sister and role model in their life rather than just another companion pet.

When I am not playing with the kiddos you can find me enjoying lots of belly rubs, stinky smells, and all you can eat buffet in my doggie dish :)

Well that pretty much sums up my fantastic life..oh yeah and a quick shout out to all my friends at Powell Vet, thanks for keeping me healthy and looking great!

AUGUST PET OF THE MONTH: PEPPER

Pepper was found along the busy highway of 84 between the Bridge of the Gods and Multnomah Falls when her bright green eyes were spotted by a family that was passing by. After picking up the little black kitten it was obvious that her condition was not good with her eyes being glazed over, malnourished and deep wounds
on both of her back legs. The family then decided to bring the kitten straight to Powell Boulevard Veterinary Clinic even if it caused a delay in weekend plans.

Once Pepper arrived at Powell Vet Dr. Klau examined the new little kitten and found out that she not only tore the bottom lip away from her mouth but also had two badly injured back legs. One of the legs ended up being a little more serious with 3 out of 4 bones broken. After bandaging both legs and a belly full of food, Pepper was off to her new home!

One week later Pepper had doubled her weight and went from having both legs in a bandage to only one. However it was still hard for her to do daily things that some may take for granted, such as using the litter box, jumping on the couch, running and other activities that fall into the life style of a feline. Even with the obstacles that came her way nothing seemed to slow this little gal down.

Pepper is still rocking her colorful leg bandage but she is on the road to recovery as she enjoys her new family and feline housemates.

Hey! My name is Blind Lemon Jefferson and I am just an average 11 month old cat for the most part, who loves the laid back life of a feline. So now let me tell you a little somethin', somethin' about myself…

Almost a year ago I was separated from my mom and then somehow wondered into a lovely garden where I kicked it for awhile, sounds nice right? It was cool place to hang but I started to get hungry, a little lonely and then I found these funny little black things that were crawling all over me which caused lots of itching but even worse my eyes got all crusty and I could not see the pretty flowers in the garden. At this point I was feeling down on my luck until the nice owner of the garden found me, stuffed me into a paper bag and off to Powell Vet. I went! When I arrived at the vet my new friend was not able to take care of a kitten so I then got to stay at the clinic where I was taken care of, fed yummy food and made lots of new friends. My health started to improve with a big thanks to Dr. Tokar, who found out that I have this thing going on with my eyes called eyelid agenesis which pretty much means I do not have an upper eye lid that causes the hair to scratch my eyes (no bueno).

So with all of that said I think I can say my luck has started to make a turn in the right direction. But there was still one more surprise in store for me…When I thought things could not get any better one of the sweet ladies at the vet decided to take me home! Now I am living life and hangin' with my new canine pals Chester and Eggy (the 3 musketeers). I still have problems with my eyes but my mom just puts ointment on them and poof its magic, I can see!

Life is good.

June Pet of the Month: Willy

Willy was rescued from an abusive home that had more than 20 dogs living under one roof, which lacked food, water and love. However he was one of the lucky ones that went to a foster home with another friend and a litter of puppies. Willy then stayed at the foster home for a year before he moved into SE Portland with his new permanent Mom. For the next three years Willy enjoyed swimming, backpacking, running on the Oregon Coast, chasing birds and tearing the squeaks out of his stuffed toys.

In the summer of 2009 Willy was diagnosed with lymphoma. He then had an invasive surgery followed by chemotherapy, but despite everything he was always upbeat, happy and incredibly brave. Some may think a visit to the doctor may seem scary and not fun but this was not the case according to Willy who enjoyed his daily visits to Powell Veterinary Clinic and Cascade Veterinary Referral Center.

The staff at Powell Vet will not forget Willy’s strength, kindness, love and will truly be missed.

Hi! My name is Rio and I am your typical 10 year old lab who is full of energy and loves to play fetch. Not to long ago I was playing with my favorite tennis ball and tore my Achilles tendon (ouch) Not to fear, I have been healing strong with the laser therapy recommended by Dr. Lathrop at Powell Boulevard Veterinary Clinic. It has been 3 months and I am walking (and even running) across the lawn. My Dad cringes when I do, but I just can't help myself :) I still have a few months of laser therapy left, but things are looking up!

Canine Influenza Information

Due to recent media publicity, many of our clients have questions regarding the Canine Influenza virus and the associated vaccine. Our doctors here at Powell Blvd. Veterinary Clinic are closely watching the current literature, the prevalence of reported infections and any warnings issued for our area.

At this point we are weighing the risks and benefits of vaccinating each dog individually. At highest risk are dogs in facilities where they are housed together and where there is a high turnover of dogs in and out of the facility. Dogs in shelters, training facilities and pet stores; or pets that frequent day care centers, dog shows, boarding facilities, veterinary clinics and grooming parlors are at highest risk for exposure to Canine Influenza virus, especially if these facilities are located in communities where the virus is prevalent.

Currently there have only been two documented cases of Canine Influenza in the State of Oregon. Colorado, Florida, New York and Pennsylvania are currently the states where Canine Influenza is prevalent.

Canine Influenza: Frequently Asked Questions

Dr. Cynda Crawford, Clinical Assistant Professor in the Maddie’s Shelter Medicine Program at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine, prepared this fact sheet to answer the 10 most popular questions from dog owners about canine influenza.

1. What is canine influenza?
Canine influenza is a highly contagious respiratory infection of dogs caused by a novel influenza A subtype H3N8 virus that was first discovered in 2004.

2. Where does canine influenza occur?
Canine influenza has been documented in 30 states and the District of Columbia. At this time, the canine influenza virus (CIV) is very prevalent in many communities in Colorado, Florida, New York, and Pennsylvania.

3. What type of infection does CIV cause?
Similar to influenza viruses that infect other mammals, canine influenza virus causes an acute respiratory infection in dogs. It is one of several viruses and bacteria that are associated with canine infectious respiratory disease, or what’s commonly referred to as “kennel cough”. CIV infection can cause respiratory disease by itself or along with other canine respiratory pathogens. Unlike human influenza, canine influenza is not a “seasonal” infection. Infections can occur year round.

4. What are the clinical signs of canine influenza?
Like influenza viruses for other species, CIV causes flu‐like illness consisting of cough, sneezing, and nasal discharge. Virtually all exposed dogs become infected; about 80% develop flu‐like illness, while another 20% do not become ill. Fortunately, most dogs recover within 2 weeks without any further health complications. However, some dogs progress to pneumonia, which is usually due to secondary bacterial infections. While the overall mortality rate for canine influenza is low, the secondary pneumonia can be life‐threatening. There is no evidence for age or breed susceptibility for developing pneumonia during canine influenza.

5. Who is susceptible to canine influenza?
Because canine influenza is due to a virus that is novel to the canine population, dogs lack preexisting immunity to the virus. Dogs of any breed, age or health status are therefore susceptible to infection. Although studies have not verified, it is likely that dogs that have recovered from infection retain immunity to re‐infection for an undetermined time period.
Canine influenza is most likely to spread in facilities where dogs are housed together and where there is a high turnover of dogs in and out of the facility. Dogs in shelters, boarding and training facilities, day care centers, dog shows, veterinary clinics, pet stores and grooming parlors are at highest risk for exposure to CIV, especially if these facilities are located in communities where the virus is prevalent. Dogs that mostly stay at home and walk around the neighborhood are at low risk. CIV does not infect people, and there is no documentation that cats have become infected by exposure to dogs with canine influenza.

6. How is canine influenza transmitted?
As with other respiratory pathogens, the most efficient transmission occurs by direct contact with infected dogs and by aerosols generated by coughing and sneezing. The virus can also contaminate kennel surfaces, food and water bowls, collars and leashes, and the hands and clothing of people who handle infected dogs. Fortunately, the virus is easily inactivated by washing hands, clothes and other items with soap and water.

7. How is canine influenza diagnosed?
Canine influenza cannot be diagnosed by clinical signs because all of the other respiratory pathogens cause similar signs of coughing, sneezing, and nasal discharge. For dogs that have been ill for less than 4 days, veterinarians can collect swabs from the nose or throat and submit them to a diagnostic laboratory that offers a validated PCR test for canine influenza virus. The most accurate test recommended for confirmation of infection requires the collection of a small blood sample from the dog during the first week of illness, followed by collection of another sample 10 to 14 days later. The paired serum samples are submitted to a diagnostic laboratory for measurement of antibodies to CIV that were formed in response to infection.

8. How is canine influenza treated?
Since canine influenza is a viral infection, treatment consists mainly of supportive care while the virus runs its course, much like for human influenza. Dog owners should consult with their veterinarians if they think their dog has canine influenza. The veterinarian can determine what type of supportive care is needed, including whether antibiotics should be given for secondary bacterial infections. Dogs with pneumonia most likely require more intensive care provided in a hospital setting under the supervision of a veterinarian.

9. Is canine influenza contagious?
Like influenza infections in other species, canine influenza is highly contagious. Infected dogs shed virus in their respiratory secretions for 7 to 10 days, during which time the dog is contagious to other dogs. Infected dogs that do not show clinical signs are also contagious. Once the virus has run its course, the dog is no longer contagious. Therefore, we recommend that dogs with canine influenza be isolated from other dogs for two weeks to err on the conservative side. CIV does not cause a permanent infection.

10. Is there a vaccine for canine influenza?
In May 2009, the USDA approved the licensure of the first influenza vaccine for dogs developed by Intervet/Schering Plough Animal Health Corporation. The canine influenza vaccine contains inactivated whole virus, so there is no chance that the vaccine itself can cause respiratory infections. During tests to evaluate vaccine performance, there were no side effects or safety issues in a field trial including more than 700 dogs ranging in age from six weeks to 10 years and representing 30 breeds. The vaccine is intended as an aid in the control of disease associated with CIV infection. Although the vaccine may not prevent infection, efficacy trials have shown that vaccination significantly reduces the severity and duration of clinical illness, including the incidence and severity of damage to the lungs. In addition, the vaccine reduces the amount of virus shed and shortens the shedding interval. This means that vaccinated dogs that become infected have less illness and are not as contagious to other dogs. These benefits are similar to those provided by influenza vaccines used in other species, including humans. The canine influenza vaccine is a “lifestyle” vaccine, in that it is intended for dogs at risk for exposure to CIV, including those that participate in activities with many other dogs or are housed in communal facilities, particularly in communities where the virus is prevalent. Dogs that may benefit from canine influenza vaccination include those that are already receiving the kennel cough vaccine for Bordetella because the risk groups are the same. Dog owners should consult with their veterinarian to determine whether their dog’s lifestyle includes risk for exposure to CIV, and the protection provided by the canine influenza vaccine.

Dr. Felton or Paris Hilton? YOU Be the Judge...

Dr. Felton recently added a member to her family. We found the dog currently referred to as Lupe (short for Guadalupe I believe...) in a carrier on our front porch, VERY pregnant. She attempted to whelp that very night. She successfully gave birth to 2 puppies, but Dr. Felton had to do a Cesarean section on her to remove the 3rd puppy. All puppies entered into the world alive and breathing, however they sadly all faded away within a few days. Since Lupe was very thin and in poor shape it's very likely the puppies just never had that great of a chance from the get go. :-(

Anyway, on the HAPPY note, Dr. Felton has adopted Lupe...and as you can see from the attached photo, is perhaps doting on Lupe just a "little" bit. I think the picture says more than I ever could...Enjoy!

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) continues to caution consumers about a potential association between the development of illness in dogs and the consumption of chicken jerky products. The products-also called chicken tenders, strips, or treats-are imported from China. FDA continues to receive complaints of sick dogs that their owners or veterinarians associate with eating chicken jerky products. FDA issued a cautionary warning to consumers in September 2007.
Australian news organizations report that the University of Sydney is also investigating an association between illness in dogs and the consumption of chicken jerky in Australia. At least one firm in Australia has recalled their chicken jerky product and the recall notification stated the product was manufactured in China.
What is FDA Doing?
* FDA, in addition to several veterinary diagnostic laboratories in the United States, is working to find out why these products are associated with illness in dogs. To date, scientists have not been able to determine a precise cause for the reported illnesses.
* FDA has conducted extensive chemical and microbial testing but has not identified any contaminant.
* FDA continues to actively investigate the problem. Many of the illnesses reported may be the result of causes other than eating chicken jerky.
Tips for Consumers
* Do not substitute chicken jerky products for a balanced diet. The products are intended to be used occasionally and in small quantities. Owners of small dogs must be especially careful to limit the amount of these products.
* If you choose to feed your dog chicken jerky products, watch the dog closely. Stop feeding the product if your dog shows any of the following signs, which may occur within hours to days after feeding the product:
- decreased appetite, although some dogs may continue to eat the treats instead of other foods
- decreased activity
- vomiting
- diarrhea, sometimes with blood
- increased water drinking or increased urination
* Call your veterinarian if signs are severe or last for more than 24 hours. Blood tests may indicate kidney failure (increased urea nitrogen and creatinine). Urine tests may indicate Fanconi syndrome (increased glucose). Although most dogs appear to recover, some reports to FDA have involved dogs that have died.
* Consumers and veterinarians should report cases of animal illness associated with pet foods or treats to the FDA Consumer Complaint Coordinator listed for their area at www.fda.gov/opacom/backgrounders/complain.html.

A Dog's Ten Commandments

This is one of those e-mail forwards that has been going everywhere as of late.(The photo is my dog's outside a very dirty sliding glass door trying to tell me how badly they NEED to come back inside!!!) Anyway, we all really like this, so in case you missed it, here it is:

1. My life is likely to last 10-15 years. Any separation from you is likely to be painful.

2. Give me time to understand what you want of me.

3. Place your trust in me. It is crucial for my well-being.

4. Don't be angry with me for long and don't lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends, your entertainment, but I have only you.

5. Talk to me. Even if I don't understand your words, I do understand your voice when speaking to me.

6. Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget it.

7. Before you hit me, before you strike me, remember that I could hurt you, and yet, I choose not to bite you.

8. Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I'm not getting the right food, I have been in the sun too long, or my heart might be getting old or weak.

9. Please take care of me when I grow old. You too, will grow old.

10. On the ultimate difficult journey, go with me please. Never say you can't bear to watch. Don't make me face this alone. Everything is easier for me if you are there, because I love you so.

Maverick is probably the happiest dog that ever lived. He came to me from northern California from my daughter-in-law’s sister (who was working two jobs and going to school at the time). He had been a stray that she found alone on a road and took him home. Because her time for him was pretty much non-existent, she finally relented to give him to me after I lost my first dog Molly from poisoned food. Our first visit walk was to the PBVC the day after I got him, when we walked over to get him an appointment to be neutered.

In the meantime, a friend at work had adopted a Labrador from the Oregon Humane Society and was telling me about having a DNA test done on Jessie because they were very curious about his lineage. When Maverick and I went in for his annual checkup and vaccinations in May, I asked about having a DNA test done on him as well. The staff at PBVC was very excited because this was going to be the first DNA test done at the clinic. It took about a month to get the results and when they came, they were very interesting. Maverick looks like a smaller version of Benji and even the vet classified him as a terrier mix. His DNA results came back and said he is part basset hound, Chihuahua, pug, Pomeranian, and Tibetan spaniel.

He is full of energy and does what he’s supposed to do—alert me when someone is knocking on the door or when there is a squirrel loose in the backyard. He gives me all the devotion he is capable of. He does like to chew, however. Here is a picture of him on my bed with the results of his handiwork showing on my quilt. (I couldn't include the arrow she had pointed at the damage on the quilt, but if you look closely you can see a little tear in the bottom.)
